Right-to-know seminar to be held Sept. 23

"The Need for Transparency in Government and Knowing Your Rights," a seminar on Pennsylvania's new right-to-know law, will be presented at 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Shickshinny firehouse.

Shickshinny Councilwoman Francene Tearpock-Martini and the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records will host the event, which is free of charge.

Kim de Bourbon, executive director of the Pennsylvania Freedom of Information Coalition, will speak on the topic, "Your government, your right to know."

Other guest speakers also are planned, along with a question-and-answer session.

Under the law, Pennsylvania citizens no longer have to prove a record is public, according to Tearpock-Martini, and government documents are assumed public unless barred by certain disclosures.

"I have always been a proponent of open government and after retiring from my own corporation I ran for public office in our borough and was elected and have been involved in getting the word out to our constituency ever since who have more or less been in the dark," Tearpock-Martini said in an e-mail. "I believe those who pay the bills should be entitled to the information which has been unavailable or MIA, or difficult to obtain."
